January–February 2026
Healthy mouth. Healthier year.
A new year is a natural reset—for people and pets.
If you’ve been thinking, “I should really take care of my pet’s dental health this year,” this is a great place to start.
For January and February 2026, Dr. Josy is offering a Clean Start Dental Resolution to help pets begin the year more comfortably and healthily.
A Personal Note From Dr. Josy
I see dental pain in pets far more often than most people realize.
Pets are incredibly good at hiding discomfort. Many continue eating, playing, and wagging their tails—while living with painful dental disease that can’t be seen from the outside.
That’s why I take dental care seriously and recommend COHAT over surface-level cleanings.
My goal is simple:
Find problems early, treat them properly, and help your pet feel better—before things become complicated or costly.
What Is COHAT (And Why It Matters So Much)?
You may be wondering, “What exactly is COHAT?”
COHAT stands for Comprehensive Oral Health Assessment and Treatment.
In plain language, COHAT means:
Examining the entire mouth, not just visible teeth
Evaluating what’s happening below the gum line
Using dental X-rays to see what cannot be seen otherwise
Creating a treatment plan based on your pet’s actual needs
COHAT is the gold standard of veterinary dental care.
“My Pet Gets Regular Dental Cleanings. Isn’t That Enough?”
This is one of the most common questions I hear—and it’s a very fair one.
The short answer is yes, COHAT is still necessary.
Basic dental cleanings:
Clean only the visible crowns of the teeth
Do not treat disease below the gum line
Can make teeth look better and breath smell better—temporarily
They do not diagnose or treat the most painful and dangerous dental problems.
Please avoid places offering “anesthesia-free dentistry.”
Without anesthesia and dental X-rays, proper dental care is not possible—and it’s not humane.
Why Oral Health Affects the Whole Body
Dental disease doesn’t stay in the mouth.
Untreated dental infections can contribute to:
Chronic pain
Periodontal disease
Jaw damage and fractures
Sinus infections
Increased risk to the kidneys and liver
COHAT allows us to identify and treat problems before they reach this stage—saving your pet discomfort and saving you stress later.
What’s Included in Your Pet’s COHAT
Every pet is different, but a true COHAT always includes:
Review of pre-anesthetic blood work
Review of medical history, diet, and chewing habits
A thorough oral exam
Dental probing and charting
Full-mouth dental X-rays (before and after treatment)
Treatment of problems found
Diseased teeth are extracted when needed
Root canals, crowns, and bone grafts are not performed
Clear discharge instructions for pain control and feeding
Guidance for at-home dental care and future COHAT planning
Why Dental X-Rays Are Always Used
More than 50% of a pet’s tooth structure is below the gum line.
Without dental X-rays:
Painful abscesses and resorption can be missed
Teeth may be removed unnecessarily, or left in when they shouldn’t be
Jaw weakness may go undetected before surgery
Dental X-rays:
Guide safer, more precise treatment
Reduce surprises during procedures
Confirm that diseased teeth are entirely removed
Document healing and quality care
They allow me to treat your pet correctly the first time.
